Puget Sound ESD is striving to become an anti racist, multi cultural institution. In alignment with that goal, our Board of Directors and staff worked together to create and implement a new procedure for recruiting board members during ESD elections. We wanted to go beyond our “usual” networks, having noticed that many seats had gone uncontested in the past. The ESD created a comprehensive communications plan with multi pletactics, including advertising on our website and social media channels, taking out paid advertisements in ethnic media, and sending a flyer to our community networks. The response was larger than ever before! We ended up recruiting 13 candidates to run for the six seats that are up for election, with all but one open seat having more than one candidate. Our ESD is looking forward to working with the selected candidates, and reviewing the results of our outreach campaign.

Congrats, Senator Wellman (D-41st), winner of our 2022 Award of Distinction! Wellman is an incredible education advocate and change agent. This year, she led the Senate to update the prototypical funding bill to provide significant investments in student health – including funding for counselors, nurses, and mental health support staff that will serve students for years to come.
