Member Profile
|
Darlene Stickel is known as ‘De’ to her friends and colleagues at ESD 112 in Vancouver. She was elected in 1998 and has served as Board President two times in those 28 years. But her longest stint has been with her close relationship with the Cascadia Technical Academy, where she has served for 37 years on the Advisory Committee! That is a total of 65 years of board experience.

De is the “connection of boardsmanship to the student. She knows what she is talking about!” said one of her colleagues. Whenever she can, De loves hanging out with students and says, “ It is simply amazing to see the student leadership that comes out of the academy,” she said.
|
De’s background is in industry. First, she served as a procurement specialist for many years at Hewlitt-Packard. Then, she left for a while, returned to college, and got her master’s degree in management and organizational leadership. Finally, she went back to work at HP as a contractor. She knows leadership skills and has been able to apply her experiences to help the ESD 112 be an efficient service center.

In addition, De is a published author — and has three books on Amazon (for those of us who want to purchase…). But the most remarkable part of her story is that De is a voracious reader. Literally, she reads 3–4 books each week and consumes over 200 books per year!
|
“Serving on ESD 112’s Board of Directors for 28 years has been deeply satisfying and has transformed my understanding of educational advocacy,” she said. “The role has broadened my sense of self and enabled me to collaborate in ways unheard of in my youth. Today even the smallest districts can offer students options that once seemed out of reach.”
|

It is a pleasure to highlight De Stickel as our Member Profile for August. She is a remarkable member of our association, and the AESD is stronger because of her advocacy.
