Building strong, connected systems of literacy support across Washington through leadership, collaboration, and high-quality professional learning.

Strengthening English Language Arts Instruction Across Washington

English Language Arts (ELA) and Regional Literacy Coordinators partner with OSPI to strengthen literacy instruction through a coordinated statewide network. This initiative connects specialists in ELA, educational technology, math, and science to provide a comprehensive, integrated system of support, rather than standalone programs.

What Regional Literacy Coordinators Do

Aligned with Washington state learning standards and instructional best practices, Literacy Coordinators:

  • Build leadership capacity in literacy instruction
  • Foster collaboration across subject areas to embed literacy skills into all aspects of learning
  • Strengthen district systems that support teaching and learning

Regional Literacy Coordinators provide flexible, responsive support to students, families, educators, and community partners, building a strong statewide literacy framework that fosters critical thinking and prepares students for lifelong success. They work directly with schools to:

  • Implement structured literacy practices
  • Improve writing instruction
  • Embed literacy across all subject areas
